Best Weekend Beach Trips from California on a Nonstop Flight

California has great beaches. But there's something about landing somewhere new, dropping your bags, and walking to a beach that isn't your usual one. These destinations all have nonstop flights from California and put you near the water with minimal effort.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Two hours from LAX. You land, the desert meets the Pacific, and the whole town is built around the water. The beach at Medano is swimmable (not all Cabo beaches are, so this matters). Sunset views of the Arch from a restaurant on the marina are hard to beat.

Cabo is the easiest international beach weekend from California. Resorts range from budget-friendly all-inclusives to high-end boutique spots. The food is excellent, especially if you wander away from the tourist strip and into the local taco spots.

Nonstop from: LAX, SFO, SAN

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta has more character than Cabo. The malecon (boardwalk) runs along the water through the old town, with street performers, sculptures, and restaurants spilling onto the sidewalk. The beaches south of town around Conchas Chinas are quieter and beautiful.

The Romantic Zone is walkable, affordable, and has a genuine neighborhood feel. Great seafood, strong cocktail scene, and the Pacific sunsets are world-class. The flight is about three hours from LA.

San Diego

Yes, it's still California. But if you're flying from San Francisco or Sacramento, San Diego is a completely different beach experience. Pacific Beach, La Jolla, and Coronado each have their own personality. The flight from SFO is barely an hour.

Coronado in particular is worth the trip. The beach is wide, clean, and relatively uncrowded compared to LA beaches. The Hotel del Coronado is an iconic backdrop even if you don't stay there. And the fish tacos in the surrounding area are the real deal.

Nonstop from: SFO, OAK, SJC, SMF

Mazatlan, Mexico

Mazatlan is the one most people overlook. The historic centro has colonial architecture, local markets, and seafood restaurants where you'll be the only tourist. The beaches are long and uncrowded. The malecon stretches for miles.

It's cheaper than Cabo or Puerto Vallarta and feels more authentically Mexican. The flight is about two hours from LA. If you want a beach weekend that feels like a discovery rather than a resort, Mazatlan is the play.

Nonstop from: LAX

Scottsdale (with a pool)

Okay, it's not technically a beach. But hear us out. Scottsdale's resort pool scene is genuinely one of the best in the Southwest. Many hotels have pools that rival beach clubs, with cabanas, DJs on weekends, and swim-up bars. The flight is about an hour from SoCal.

The advantage over an actual beach trip is that Scottsdale is almost guaranteed sunshine. No marine layer, no overcast mornings. Just clear desert sky and warm water. Pair the pool day with Old Town Scottsdale restaurants at night and it's a legitimate weekend.

What about Hawaii?

We get asked this a lot. Hawaii is incredible, but the five to six hour flight each way makes it a tough weekend trip. You lose most of Friday getting there and most of Sunday getting back due to the time zone change. We'd recommend saving Hawaii for a four-day weekend or longer trip.

For a true Friday-to-Sunday beach weekend, the Mexico destinations above are the sweet spot: close enough to arrive Friday night, far enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere.
