The 10 Best Weekend Trips from California (Nonstop Flights Only)
Not every weekend trip is created equal. Some destinations sound great until you realize the only flights connect through Dallas and land at midnight. Others are technically reachable but leave you with six hours on the ground before you have to turn around.
We built LeaveFriday to solve this exact problem. Every destination we list has verified nonstop service from California, with flights timed so you can leave after work on Friday and get back at a reasonable hour on Sunday. Here are the ten we keep coming back to.
1. Denver
Two hours from most California airports. You land, and the Rockies are right there. Friday night, grab dinner on Larimer Square. Saturday, pick a hike or hit a brewery crawl through RiNo. Sunday morning, coffee at a rooftop spot with mountain views before your afternoon flight home. Denver works every single time.
Fly from: LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK, SJC, BUR, SNA, SMF, ONT
2. Scottsdale
The desert is underrated as a weekend destination. Pool by day, Old Town restaurants by night. The flight is barely an hour from most of Southern California. In spring and fall the weather is perfect. Even in summer, the dry heat and resort pools make it work. Plus, everything is ten minutes from everything else.
Fly from: LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK, SJC, BUR, SNA
3. Seattle
Pike Place on Saturday morning. Coffee that actually lives up to the hype. The waterfront, Capitol Hill, a ferry ride to Bainbridge Island if you want to feel like you left the country. Seattle has more personality per square block than cities twice its size. And the food scene is quietly world-class.
Fly from: LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK, SJC, BUR, SNA, ONT
4. Las Vegas
Skip the strip cliches. The food in Vegas is genuinely some of the best in the country. See a show, eat at a restaurant you'd wait three months for in LA, and the flight home is barely an hour. Budget-friendly too since hotel competition keeps prices down, especially midweek extensions into Thursday night.
Fly from: LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK, SJC, BUR, SNA, SMF
5. Cabo
You're on the beach in Mexico two hours after leaving LA. The arch, fish tacos on the marina, a sunset cruise if you're feeling it. Cabo is the easiest international weekend from California, and the resort scene means you can go as budget or as luxe as you want. Passport required, but worth keeping current just for this.
Fly from: LAX, SFO, SAN
6. Portland
Powell's Books, food carts that put most sit-down restaurants to shame, and nature twenty minutes in any direction. Portland is the kind of city where you can have a completely different weekend every time you visit. The vibe is relaxed in a way that feels genuine, not manufactured.
Fly from: LAX, SFO, OAK, SJC, SAN, SMF
7. Austin
Live music on Sixth Street, breakfast tacos that rewire your brain, and Barton Springs when you need to cool down. Austin runs hotter than California but the energy is infectious. South Congress for shopping, East Austin for the best food, and Rainey Street for Friday night. The flight is about three hours from the coast.
Fly from: LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK, SJC, ONT
8. Nashville
Hot chicken at Prince's, honky-tonks on Broadway, and the friendliest strangers you'll meet anywhere. Nashville is further than most destinations on this list (about four hours from the West Coast) but the city packs so much into a small area that a 48-hour visit feels complete. Go for the music, stay for the food.
Fly from: LAX, SFO, OAK
9. Salt Lake City
This one surprises people. Salt Lake City is a gateway to some of the best outdoor terrain in the country, and the downtown has quietly become a legit food and bar scene. In winter, you're skiing within 30 minutes of landing. In summer, hiking trails that rival anything in California. The flight is about two hours.
Fly from: LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK, SJC, BUR, SNA
10. New Orleans
There is no city in America like New Orleans. The architecture, the jazz, the gumbo, the entire energy of the French Quarter at night. It's about four hours from California, which makes it a stretch for a weekend, but every person who's done it says it was worth it. Book a Friday evening departure and you'll have two full days.
Fly from: LAX, SFO
