Budget Weekend Getaways from California: Under $200 Per Person, All In

Under $200 per person for flights and two nights of hotel. That's the real budget tier. It limits your options, but it doesn't eliminate them. There are consistently two to four routes from California where this budget works, especially if you're flexible on which airport you fly from.

The routes that work at this price

Las Vegas from any California airport ($130-200 per person)

The king of budget weekends. Frontier and Spirit run fares as low as $40 round trip from LAX, and Southwest isn't far behind. Vegas hotels compete aggressively for midweek and off-peak weekend guests. A room at Excalibur, Luxor, or The LINQ regularly drops below $50 per night. The math: $40-80 flights plus $50-60 per night hotel ($100-120 for two nights) equals $140 to $200 per person.

The catch: budget Vegas hotels charge resort fees ($30-45 per night). Factor that in or it blows the budget. Circus Circus and some downtown properties (Golden Nugget, The D) sometimes waive or reduce resort fees on certain booking platforms.

Reno from SFO or OAK ($120-180 per person)

The Bay Area's best-kept budget secret. Southwest runs SFO and OAK to RNO for as low as $60 round trip. Reno hotel prices are dramatically lower than anywhere in the Bay Area. Casino hotels like Circus Circus Reno, Silver Legacy, and Eldorado (all Caesars properties) regularly drop below $50 per night. Total: $120 to $180 per person.

Bonus: Lake Tahoe is 45 minutes away. A budget Reno weekend with a Saturday Tahoe day trip is one of the best deals in California travel.

Phoenix from LAX, BUR, or SNA ($140-200 per person)

The flight is cheap and short. Hotels outside of peak season (April through September when it's hot) drop significantly. Budget chains near Old Town Scottsdale run $50-70 per night with pools. Total: $140 to $200 per person. Yes, it's hot in summer. But if you're a pool person, a $180 weekend in Scottsdale in June beats a $500 weekend anywhere else.

Albuquerque from LAX ($150-200 per person)

Under the radar. Southwest runs nonstops from LAX to ABQ for $80-150 round trip. Hotels in Old Town start at $60 per night. The food (green chile on everything) is cheap and excellent. The Sandia Mountains are right there for a morning hike. Total: $150 to $200 per person. Not glamorous, but genuinely enjoyable and wildly affordable.

How to hit the $200 mark

Three rules. First, book flights three weeks out on a Tuesday or Wednesday when fares are lowest. Second, check Southwest.com directly since their fares don't show on Google Flights. Third, search hotels on the booking platform that includes taxes and fees in the displayed price (Expedia shows this if you toggle the filter). Resort fees are the budget killer you don't see until checkout.
