Every California Airport for Weekend Flights: Which One Should You Fly From?

Most people default to LAX or SFO for flights out of California. But depending on where you live and where you're going, a smaller airport might save you an hour of driving, thirty minutes of security, and real money on parking. For a weekend trip where every hour counts, that matters.

Here's the honest breakdown of every California airport worth considering for a weekend getaway.

Los Angeles (LAX)

Best for: The most destinations and cheapest fares overall.

The catch: Getting to LAX is the worst part of any trip. Traffic, parking, and the terminal shuffle can eat 90 minutes easily. If you live on the Westside or South Bay, it's fine. If you're in the Valley, Pasadena, or Orange County, seriously consider BUR or SNA.

Nonstop weekend routes: 22+ destinations including all the popular ones plus international routes to Mexico.

Parking: $20-40/day at the airport, $10-15/day at off-site lots with shuttle.

San Francisco (SFO)

Best for: Bay Area residents. Strong route network, competitive prices.

The catch: BART makes it accessible from most of the Bay Area without driving. But if you're driving, parking costs add up fast ($20-36/day). International terminal is nicer than domestic.

Nonstop weekend routes: 19+ destinations. Particularly strong on Pacific Northwest routes (Portland, Seattle) and Denver.

Oakland (OAK)

Best for: East Bay residents. Southwest's hub, so prices are competitive.

The catch: Fewer routes than SFO, but the ones it has are well-served. Security is faster and parking is cheaper ($14-18/day). BART connects directly to the terminal.

Nonstop weekend routes: 11+ destinations. Strongest on Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Seattle, and Portland.

San Jose (SJC)

Best for: South Bay and Peninsula residents. Much easier than driving to SFO.

The catch: Fewer routes than SFO or OAK, and some routes are seasonal. But when the route exists, the convenience is hard to beat if you live anywhere south of Redwood City.

Nonstop weekend routes: 10+ destinations including Denver, Seattle, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Portland.

San Diego (SAN)

Best for: San Diego residents. The airport is ten minutes from downtown.

The catch: Almost none. SAN is one of the most convenient airports in the country. Short security lines, close to the city, and a solid nonstop route map. The only downside is fewer ultra-budget carriers compared to LAX.

Nonstop weekend routes: 12+ destinations including Cabo, Denver, Seattle, Austin, and Chicago.

Burbank (BUR)

Best for: Valley, Glendale, Pasadena, and northeast LA residents. A totally different experience from LAX.

The catch: Fewer routes. But the airport is small, parking is easy ($15/day), and you can arrive 45 minutes before your flight instead of two hours. For destinations that BUR serves, it's almost always the better choice over LAX if you live north of the 10.

Nonstop weekend routes: 7 destinations including Las Vegas, Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, and SFO.

Orange County/John Wayne (SNA)

Best for: OC residents. Skip the drive to LAX entirely.

The catch: Limited routes, and the noise curfew means no early morning or late night flights. But for the routes it has, SNA is far more pleasant than LAX. Small terminal, fast security, five minutes to your gate.

Nonstop weekend routes: 7 destinations including Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle.

Ontario (ONT)

Best for: Inland Empire residents. The only realistic option if you're in Riverside, San Bernardino, or Rancho Cucamonga.

The catch: The fewest routes of any airport on this list. But for destinations it serves (Las Vegas, Denver, Dallas, Phoenix), it's dramatically more convenient than fighting traffic to LAX.

How to choose

The right airport for your weekend trip depends on two things: where you live and where you're going. If your destination is served by a closer airport, always choose convenience over a slightly cheaper fare at a bigger airport. The time you save at the airport is time you spend on your trip.

For popular destinations like Las Vegas, Denver, Phoenix, and Seattle, nearly every California airport has nonstop service. Check all your options on our weekend trips page and filter by airport to see which one works best for you.
