Cheap Cabo Trip from LAX Under $400: How to Do Mexico on a Budget Weekend
Cabo under $400 per person including flights and hotel. It's doable, but it requires the right timing and realistic expectations about where you'll stay. You won't be at a luxury resort for this price. But you'll be on the beach in Mexico for two days, eating $3 tacos and drinking $5 margaritas, and that's the whole point.
The flight: getting it under $200 round trip
This is the hardest part of a budget Cabo trip. The LAX to SJD route isn't as cheap as domestic routes because it's international. Alaska Airlines and Southwest are the nonstop carriers. Average round trip is $250-350. To get it under $200, you need to book in shoulder season (April through June or September through November) at least three weeks out.
The cheapest month is typically May. December through March is peak season and fares rarely drop below $300. If you can't find a sub-$200 flight, shift your budget: $250 on flights leaves $150 for hotel ($75 per night), which is tight but workable.
Where to stay for $75-100 per night
Skip the resorts. The Romantic Zone equivalent in Cabo is the downtown area near the marina. Hotels and guesthouses here run $60 to $100 per night and put you walking distance to the beach, restaurants, and bars. You don't need a pool when the Pacific Ocean is two blocks away.
Airbnb and VRBO also work well in Cabo at this price point. A clean studio apartment near downtown Cabo San Lucas runs $50 to $80 per night and often includes a kitchen, which saves money on breakfast.
What to avoid: the all-inclusive resort trap. At under $400 total, you can't afford a resort that charges $200 per night for the room alone. And frankly, the food outside the resorts is better and cheaper.
Eating cheap in Cabo
This is where the budget trip actually gets fun. Cabo's street food and local restaurants are excellent and incredibly affordable. Tacos al pastor from a street stand: $1-2 each. A full plate of fish tacos with rice and beans at a local spot: $5-8. A margarita at a bar on the marina: $4-6. You can eat and drink very well for $30-40 per day.
The marina-front restaurants are more expensive (still cheap by US standards) but the food stands and local joints one or two streets back from the water are where the value is. Ask your hotel for recommendations. They'll steer you right.
The budget breakdown
Here's a realistic $400 weekend in Cabo from LAX:
Flights: $180-250 (book in May or June, three weeks out). Hotel: $60-80 per night, $120-160 for two nights. Food and drinks: $30-40 per day, $70-90 total. Airport transportation: $15-20 each way (shared shuttle). Grand total: $385 to $520 per person. The low end hits the $400 target in shoulder season.
