Las Vegas from LAX, BUR, SNA, OAK, SJC: Consistently the cheapest nonstop from California. Frontier, Southwest, and Spirit compete heavily on this route. One-hour flight, often under $75 each way.

San Francisco from LAX, BUR, SAN: Southwest and Alaska keep this route competitive. Under 90 minutes in the air.

Phoenix/Scottsdale from LAX, SAN, SNA: Southwest and American run frequent nonstops. The flight is barely an hour from Southern California.

Under $250 round trip

Denver from LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK, SJC: Frontier anchors the budget end, but United and Southwest are often competitive. Two to two-and-a-half hours.

Portland from LAX, SFO, OAK, SJC: Alaska and Delta are the main carriers. Prices dip under $200 regularly outside of summer.

Seattle from LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK, SJC, BUR: Heavily served route with Alaska, Delta, Southwest all competing. Under three hours.

Dallas from LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK: Three-hour flight with frequent nonstop options. American's hub means lots of availability.

Chicago from LAX, SFO, SAN: Four-hour flight, so it's a stretch for a weekend, but United and American run nonstops all day.
