Couples Weekend Getaways from LA with Flights: 8 Trips Made for Two
A weekend trip for two doesn't need to be expensive or elaborate. It just needs to feel different from normal life. Leave Friday after work, land somewhere new by dinner, and spend 48 hours eating well, sleeping in, and not looking at your phones. Here are eight trips from LA that do exactly that.
Scottsdale: the pool weekend
90-minute flight. Resort pools, desert sunsets, Old Town dinners. Scottsdale is built for couples who want to relax without an agenda. Get a hotel with a good pool (Hotel Valley Ho, Mountain Shadows, or The Scott) and alternate between the pool, the spa, and the restaurant scene. Total for two: $400-600.
Cabo: the international escape
2-hour flight. Beach, margaritas, sunset on the marina. Cabo feels like you went somewhere significant even though the flight is shorter than the drive to San Diego in Friday traffic. Stay in Cabo San Lucas proper for walkability. Dinner at La Palapa with your feet in the sand is hard to beat for romance. Total for two: $700-1,200.
San Francisco: the city romantic
90-minute flight. Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Dinner in North Beach. Wine bar in Hayes Valley. SF has a romantic quality that LA doesn't, partly because the city is compact and walkable and partly because the fog and the hills create a mood that car-centric LA can't replicate. Total for two: $500-800.
Portland: the foodie weekend
2.5-hour flight. If you and your partner bond over food, Portland is the trip. The restaurant and wine bar scene is world-class and half the price of comparable quality in LA. Saturday: food carts for lunch, a wine bar in the Pearl District, dinner at a place that would have a month-long waitlist in LA. Total for two: $500-700.
Denver: the active couple
2.5-hour flight. Hike Red Rocks Saturday morning, brewery crawl Saturday afternoon, nice dinner in LoDo Saturday night. Denver is for the couple that wants to do things, not just sit. The mountain backdrop adds something you don't get in most weekend destinations. Total for two: $500-700.
Puerto Vallarta: the malecon sunset
3-hour flight. More romantic than Cabo. The malecon boardwalk at sunset, dinner at a rooftop restaurant in the Romantic Zone (the neighborhood is literally named for this), cocktails with Pacific views. Cheaper than Cabo with more character. Total for two: $600-1,000.
Nashville: the unexpected date weekend
4-hour flight. Live music, incredible food, and a city that's friendlier than anywhere in California. Walk Broadway on Saturday night and let the energy carry you. Sunday morning brunch at a spot with live acoustic music. Nashville works for couples because the city is a shared experience you can't replicate at home. Total for two: $600-900.
Las Vegas: the guilty pleasure
1-hour flight. Yes, it's cliche. But a couples weekend in Vegas focused on food and shows (not gambling) is legitimately great. Book a nice dinner, see Cirque or a residency show, walk the strip at night, sleep in. The flight is so short and cheap that it's almost irresponsible not to go at least once. Total for two: $400-700.
