How to Plan a Weekend Trip from LA (Without Wasting Half of It Traveling)

The number one reason weekend trips from LA fail is bad timing. You take a Saturday morning flight, lose half the day getting there, then stress about the Sunday return. By the time you actually relax, it's time to leave.

Here's how to fix that.

The Friday evening nonstop is everything

The ideal departure is between 6 and 8 PM on Friday. You finish work, head to the airport (or leave a bit early), and you're landing at your destination by 8 or 9 PM. That gives you Friday night, all of Saturday, and Sunday morning before heading back. That's a real trip.

The destinations that work best from LAX are the ones with short nonstop flights: Las Vegas (1 hour), San Diego (under an hour), Scottsdale (1.5 hours), Denver (2.5 hours), San Francisco (1.5 hours), and Portland (2.5 hours). Any of these get you there in time for a late dinner.

Pick the right return time

The sweet spot for your Sunday return is a 3 to 6 PM departure. That gives you all of Sunday morning and early afternoon at your destination. You land at LAX by early evening, and you still have time to decompress before Monday.

Avoid anything before noon on Sunday unless you're okay with your weekend being one full day. Avoid red-eyes on a Sunday night unless you can function on Monday with no sleep.

Don't overpack the itinerary

The biggest mistake on a 48-hour trip is trying to see everything. Pick two or three things you actually want to do and build around those. The rest of the time, walk around, eat well, and let the city come to you. You're not on a seven-day vacation. You're recharging.

Hotels matter more than you think

On a short trip, your hotel location is critical. You don't have time to commute from a suburb. Pick something central, even if it costs a bit more per night. Two nights at a well-located hotel beats three nights at a budget spot forty minutes from everything.

The airports most people forget about

LAX isn't your only option. Burbank (BUR) is smaller, easier to park at, and faster through security. If you're in Orange County, John Wayne (SNA) has nonstop service to a surprising number of destinations. Ontario (ONT) is the move if you're in the Inland Empire. Check all your nearby airports before defaulting to LAX.
