Is Portland Worth It for a Weekend from LA?
Yes, Portland is worth it for a weekend from LA. But it's worth it for specific reasons, and if those reasons don't appeal to you, you'd be happier going somewhere else.
Portland is worth the trip if you care about
Food. Portland's food cart scene, bakeries, and restaurants are genuinely special. The quality-to-price ratio is better than almost any city in the US. Places that would cost $50 per person in LA cost $25 in Portland. And the food carts serve dishes that rival sit-down restaurants.
Bookstores and coffee. Powell's City of Books is an entire city block of books. The coffee scene (Stumptown, Heart, Coava) is on par with any city in the world. If a morning of great coffee and book browsing sounds like heaven, Portland is your place.
A slower pace. Portland doesn't have LA's hustle. The city is smaller, quieter, and more walkable. Nobody is in a hurry. For a weekend trip, that change of pace is the whole point.
Nature access. Forest Park is a 5,200-acre forest inside the city. The Columbia River Gorge is 30 minutes east. Multnomah Falls is 45 minutes away. Portland gives you urban and outdoor in the same weekend without trying.
Portland might not be worth it if
You want nightlife (Portland's bar scene is great but it shuts down early compared to LA). You want beach time (the Oregon coast is beautiful but 90 minutes away, too far for a weekend day trip). You want warm weather (Portland is gray and rainy from October through May, and that's most of the year).
The numbers
