Last Minute Weekend Deals from LAX: What You Can Book Today for This Friday

It's Wednesday. Or maybe Thursday. You've decided you need to get out of LA this weekend and you haven't booked anything. The good news: last-minute weekend deals from LAX exist. The bad news: they're not where you'd expect, and the window is short.

The truth about last-minute flight pricing

Contrary to what some deal sites claim, domestic flights do not consistently get cheaper at the last minute. Most routes from LAX get more expensive within seven days of departure. The exception is when airlines have unsold seats on routes with heavy competition. That happens most often on high-frequency routes like LAX to LAS, LAX to SFO, and LAX to PHX.

Southwest is your best friend for last-minute bookings because they don't charge change fees. Book now, and if the price drops later (even by $1), rebook for the lower fare and pocket the difference as a credit. No other major carrier offers this.

Routes most likely to have last-minute deals

Las Vegas (almost always available under $150 round trip)

The LAX to LAS route has so many daily flights across so many carriers that empty seats are common even days before departure. Check Frontier and Spirit for the lowest base fares, Southwest for the best overall value (bags included).

San Francisco (usually under $180 round trip)

Another high-frequency route. Alaska, United, Southwest, and Delta all run multiple dailies. One of them usually has availability at a reasonable price even for this Friday.

Phoenix (usually under $160 round trip)

American's hub means tons of capacity on this route. Last-minute fares stay low because the demand is spread across many flights throughout the day.

Routes to avoid last minute

Nashville, New Orleans, Austin, and international destinations like Cabo tend to get very expensive within a week of departure. These routes have less competition and fewer daily flights, so airlines can charge more when seats are scarce. If you want these destinations, book at least two weeks out.

Hotel strategy for last-minute bookings

Hotels are the opposite of flights for last-minute pricing. Hotels often drop rates in the final 48 hours to fill empty rooms. Apps like HotelTonight specialize in this. But for a more systematic approach, check Expedia with the "fully refundable" filter. Book the best available rate now, and if it drops before check-in, rebook and cancel the original.

The fastest way to find this weekend's deals

Our weekend trips page shows real-time packages for the upcoming weekend. Sort by price and filter by LAX. Every listing shows the flight time, hotel, total price, and Weekend Score. If something looks good and the price is right, book it. Last-minute deals don't last because everyone else is looking at the same time.
