The Shortest Nonstop Flights from SFO for a Quick Weekend Trip

For a weekend trip, flight time is everything. A 90-minute flight gives you roughly 6 more waking hours at your destination than a 4-hour flight. That's the difference between a relaxing trip and a rushed one. Here's every nonstop destination from SFO sorted by how fast you can get there.

Under 1.5 hours

Los Angeles (1 hr 20 min). The shortest nonstop from SFO. Southwest, Alaska, United, Delta. Fares from $80. If you've never properly explored LA, this is the easiest possible weekend trip.

Reno (1 hr 15 min). Barely more than an hour in the air. Southwest keeps it cheap. Tahoe is 45 minutes from the Reno airport. This is the fastest way to get to the mountains from the Bay Area without driving.

1.5 to 2 hours

San Diego (1 hr 45 min). Alaska, Southwest, United. Different beaches, different vibe, different food scene. A real change of pace from SF.

Las Vegas (1 hr 40 min). Basically every carrier flies this route. Cheapest nonstop from SFO for most of the year.

Portland (1 hr 50 min). Alaska, United, Southwest. The closest Pacific Northwest option. Better food carts than SF has food trucks.

Boise (1 hr 50 min). The sleeper pick. Small city, big outdoors, very affordable. Alaska runs the route.

2 to 2.5 hours

Phoenix/Scottsdale (2 hrs). Guaranteed sunshine. Pool weather 8 months of the year. Multiple carriers, competitive prices.

Salt Lake City (2 hrs 10 min). Skiing in winter, hiking in summer. The proximity to mountains from the airport is unmatched.

Seattle (2 hrs 20 min). Alaska, Delta, United, Southwest all compete. Pike Place, Capitol Hill, the ferry system. A proper city weekend.

Denver (2 hrs 30 min). Frontier, United, Southwest. One of the best value weekend trips from anywhere in California.

Why this matters for weekends

On a Friday-to-Sunday trip, every hour of flight time costs you two hours (there and back). A 90-minute flight to Reno costs you 3 hours total. A 4-hour flight to Nashville costs you 8 hours. For a trip where you only have about 40 waking hours total, that difference is massive.

Our SFO weekend packages are scored partly on flight duration. Shorter flights naturally score higher because you get more time at the destination.
