Weekend Trip to Cabo from LAX: Is 2 Days in Mexico Actually Worth It?

Two hours. That's all it takes to get from LAX to Cabo San Lucas. You board a plane in Los Angeles and step off in Mexico, where the desert meets the Pacific and the pace of life drops about ten notches. For a two-day trip, that flight time is what makes Cabo one of the best weekend getaways from California.

The flight

Alaska Airlines and Southwest are the main nonstop carriers from LAX to SJD (San Jose del Cabo International). Round trips range from $200 to $450 depending on season and how far ahead you book. Peak season (December through March) is the most expensive. April through June offers the best combination of good weather and lower prices.

Friday evening departures leave LAX around 5 to 7 PM and land by 8 to 10 PM local time (Cabo is on Mountain Time, one hour ahead of Pacific). For the return, aim for a mid-afternoon Sunday flight. You'll lose an hour on the way back, so a 3 PM departure from SJD gets you to LAX around 4 PM Pacific.

Do you need a passport?

Yes. A valid US passport is required to fly to Mexico. If yours is expired, renew it now. Expedited renewal takes about 5 to 7 weeks. If you don't have one, this is a good reason to get one because Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, and Mexico City are three of the best weekend destinations from California, and they all require it.

Where to stay

Cabo has two distinct areas: Cabo San Lucas (the lively side with bars, restaurants, and the marina) and the Corridor (the stretch of resorts between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo). For a weekend trip, stay in or near Cabo San Lucas so you're walking distance to restaurants and nightlife. You don't want to waste your limited time in a taxi.

Budget options start around $80 per night for clean, centrally located hotels. Mid-range resorts with pools and ocean views run $150 to $250. Luxury properties like The Cape or Waldorf Astoria run $400+. For a weekend, a mid-range spot on Medano Beach is the sweet spot: you get the pool, the ocean, and the walkability.

48 hours in Cabo

Friday night

You'll land around 9 or 10 PM. Check into your hotel, drop your bags, and walk to the marina for a late dinner. Most restaurants in the marina area stay open until 11 PM or later. Get tacos al pastor from a street stand or sit down for fresh ceviche and a margarita. You're in Mexico. Relax.

Saturday

This is your full day. Start with breakfast at your hotel or at a cafe in town. Then pick one activity: a boat tour to the Arch (El Arco), snorkeling at Playa del Amor, or just claim a spot on Medano Beach and don't move until sunset. Medano is the main swimmable beach in Cabo (not all beaches here are safe for swimming due to the currents).

For lunch, hit up a beachfront restaurant on Medano. The Office on the Beach is the classic Cabo lunch spot, served literally on the sand. In the afternoon, walk through the downtown area or take a water taxi to Playa del Amor if you haven't already.

Saturday evening, the marina comes alive. Edith's for upscale Mexican cuisine, Flora Farms for farm-to-table (worth the taxi ride), or just walk the marina strip and pick whatever looks good. The food quality in Cabo is genuinely high, especially the seafood.

Sunday morning

Sleep in, grab breakfast, and enjoy the pool or beach one more time before heading to the airport. SJD is about 30 minutes from Cabo San Lucas. Give yourself two hours for international departure.

What it costs

A Cabo weekend from LAX typically runs $500 to $900 per person depending on hotel tier: $200-450 for flights, $160-500 for two nights of hotel, and food and drinks in Cabo are about 40-60% cheaper than equivalent quality in LA. That margarita that costs $18 in Santa Monica is $6 in Cabo.
