Weekend Trip to Hawaii from LAX: Can You Actually Do It in 2 Days?

We get asked about Hawaii weekend trips more than any other destination. The short answer: it's possible, but it's a stretch. The longer answer is more nuanced, and whether it's worth it depends on how you value your time.

The math on timing

LAX to Honolulu is about 5.5 hours nonstop. Hawaii is 3 hours behind Pacific Time (2 hours behind during daylight saving). So a Friday 6 PM departure from LAX lands around 9 PM Hawaii time (midnight your body clock). You've now lost Friday entirely.

For the return, a Sunday 3 PM departure from HNL lands at LAX around 11 PM Pacific Time. So your "weekend" is really just Saturday plus Sunday morning. That's about 18 waking hours in Hawaii after accounting for travel, hotel check-in, and check-out.

Compare that to Denver (2.5 hour flight, same time zone math) where you get roughly 36 waking hours at your destination. Hawaii gives you half the time for twice the flight.

When it works

A Hawaii weekend works if you can swing a Thursday evening departure or a Monday return. Adding even one extra day makes a huge difference. A Thursday-to-Sunday trip gives you two full days plus two evenings. That's enough to actually relax, see a beach, have a few good meals, and come back feeling like you went somewhere.

It also works if you're the kind of person who values the destination over the duration. Some people would rather have 18 hours on a Hawaiian beach than 36 hours in Denver. That's valid. Just go in with realistic expectations.

The cost

Round trip flights from LAX to HNL run $200 to $500. Hawaiian Airlines, Delta, United, American, Southwest, and Alaska all compete on this route, so prices are reasonable. Hotels in Waikiki range from $150 to $400 per night. A strict Friday-to-Sunday trip runs $500 to $900 per person.

The hidden cost is the time zone adjustment. You'll be jet-lagged enough that Monday morning won't be great. Factor that into your decision.

Our recommendation

If you have a strict Friday-to-Sunday window, we'd recommend Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, or even Phoenix over Hawaii. You get more time on the ground, less time in the air, and similar sun-and-beach vibes for less money.

If you can swing a 3-day or 4-day weekend, Hawaii absolutely works and is one of the best trips you can take from California. Just don't try to cram it into 48 hours if you want to actually enjoy it.
