Weekend Trip to Portland from LAX: Flights, Hotels, and a 48-Hour Plan

Portland is two and a half hours from LAX. That's it. You leave after work on Friday, land before 9 PM Pacific, and wake up Saturday morning in a city that has better food carts than most cities have restaurants.

The flight

Alaska and Delta are the main carriers running nonstop from LAX to PDX. Southwest also operates the route. Friday evening departures typically leave between 5:30 and 8 PM, landing between 8 and 10:30 PM. Round trip fares usually range from $100 to $220 depending on how far out you book and which carrier you choose.

For the return, aim for a 3 to 5 PM departure on Sunday. That gives you all of Sunday morning and early afternoon in Portland, and you're back in LA by early evening.

Where to stay

Stay downtown or in the Pearl District for walkability. Both neighborhoods put you within walking distance of Powell's Books, the waterfront, and dozens of restaurants. The Pearl District has more upscale dining and boutique hotels. Downtown is more central and slightly cheaper.

If you want something with more personality, the Ace Hotel Portland set the standard for the "cool hotel in a cool city" thing before everyone else copied it. Hotel deLuxe is a good mid-range option with genuine character.

Budget tip: hotels in the Lloyd District across the river are often $30-50 cheaper per night and still walkable to downtown via the Burnside Bridge.

48 hours in Portland

Saturday morning

Start at a coffee shop. Portland takes coffee seriously and there are world-class roasters everywhere. Stumptown, Heart, and Coava are all worth seeking out. After coffee, walk to Powell's City of Books. It's an entire city block of books. Even if you're not a reader, the building itself is an experience.

Saturday afternoon

Hit the food carts. Portland has food cart pods scattered across the city, and the quality rivals sit-down restaurants. Alder Cart Pod downtown is the biggest concentration. Get a Thai curry from Nong's, a sandwich from Grilled Cheese Grill, or whatever catches your eye. Eat outside if the weather cooperates.

After lunch, walk along the waterfront or cross the Hawthorne Bridge to the east side. Hawthorne and Division streets have independent shops, bookstores, and more food than you can handle.

Saturday evening

Portland's restaurant scene punches way above its weight class. Canard for French-inspired small plates, Lardo for the best sandwiches you've ever had, or Pok Pok (if it's reopened) for Thai food that changed how Americans think about the cuisine. Book ahead for popular spots.

After dinner, the bar scene is excellent. Multnomah Whiskey Library if you can get in. Any brewery in the inner southeast if you want something casual.

Sunday morning

Brunch is serious in Portland. Screen Door, Tasty n Alder, or Pine State Biscuits are all worth the wait. After brunch, walk through Forest Park if you want nature (it's the largest urban forest in the US), or browse the shops on NW 23rd Avenue.

Head to PDX by early afternoon. Portland's airport is consistently rated one of the best in the country, small enough that you can arrive an hour before your flight without stress.

What it costs

A full Portland weekend from LAX typically runs $350 to $550 per person: $100-220 for flights, $120-180 per night for a decent hotel, and Portland's food and drinks are notably cheaper than LA. Check current LAX to Portland packages for this week's prices.
