SFO to Portland Weekend Trip: A Quick Guide for Bay Area Travelers

Portland is one of the closest nonstop destinations from SFO, and one of the most rewarding for a short trip. Two hours in the air. Similar West Coast sensibility but a completely different city personality. And significantly cheaper than the Bay Area for food, drinks, and hotels.

The flight

Alaska, United, and Southwest all run SFO to PDX nonstop. Round trips are typically $100 to $200. This is one of the cheapest nonstop routes from SFO. Friday evening options leave between 5 and 8 PM, landing before 10 PM.

Why Portland from the Bay Area

Bay Area residents sometimes think Portland is "too similar" to visit. It's not. Portland is smaller, more walkable, and has a food cart and brewery culture that's genuinely unique. The pace is different. There's no tech-industry energy. It's a creative city that happens to have incredible food, and that's a refreshing change from the Bay Area.

Also: everything is cheaper. Your hotel, your meals, your drinks. A weekend in Portland costs what a nice dinner out costs in San Francisco.

The plan

Friday night: land, check in, grab late dinner downtown or in the Pearl District. Saturday: coffee at Heart or Stumptown, Powell's Books, food carts for lunch, brewery crawl in the afternoon, nice dinner in the evening. Sunday: brunch (Screen Door or Pine State Biscuits), walk Forest Park or browse NW 23rd, fly home.

That's it. No complex itinerary needed. Portland rewards wandering.

What it costs

$300 to $500 per person total. Flights $100-200, hotels $100-160 per night downtown. Current packages at SFO to Portland.
