Weekend Trip to Puerto Vallarta from LAX: Better Than Cabo for the Right Traveler
Puerto Vallarta is for the person who wants a beach weekend in Mexico but doesn't want the spring-break energy of Cabo. It's a real city with a historic center, cobblestone streets, and a food scene that goes way beyond resort buffets. The flight from LAX is about three hours nonstop.
The flight
Alaska, Delta, and United run nonstop from LAX to PVR. Round trips typically range from $200 to $400. The best deals pop up in shoulder season (April through June and September through November). Avoid Christmas through New Year's unless you want to pay double.
Friday departures leave LAX between 5 and 7 PM, landing around 10 PM local time (PVR is on Central Time, two hours ahead of Pacific during daylight saving).
Where to stay
The Romantic Zone (Zona Romantica) is where you want to be for a weekend. It's the walkable old town south of the Cuale River, packed with restaurants, bars, and shops. Hotels here range from $60 per night guesthouses to $200 per night boutique spots. You don't need an all-inclusive for a two-night stay. The neighborhood restaurants are better and cheaper.

Saturday
Morning walk on the malecon (the boardwalk that stretches along the ocean). It's lined with sculptures, street performers, and views of the Sierra Madre mountains meeting the Pacific. Stop for breakfast at a cafe in the Romantic Zone. Joe Jack's Fish Shack or Cafe des Artistes for something more upscale.
Beach time at Playa de los Muertos (the main beach in the Romantic Zone). Rent a chair, order ceviche from a beach vendor, and don't move until you're hungry again. In the afternoon, walk across the river to downtown and browse the shops and galleries. The church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the landmark you'll see from everywhere.
Saturday dinner: La Palapa on the beach for seafood with your toes in the sand, or Tintoque for creative Mexican cuisine. Then walk the malecon at night when it's lit up and lively.
Sunday morning
Sleep in, one more beach morning or a coffee on a rooftop terrace. The airport is about 20 minutes from the Romantic Zone. International flights require earlier arrival, so plan for two hours before departure.
PVR vs Cabo
Cabo is better for: resort pools, nightlife, pristine beach clubs. Puerto Vallarta is better for: walkability, authentic Mexican culture, food variety, and budget travelers. If you want to be waited on at a resort, go to Cabo. If you want to explore a real city that happens to be on the beach, go to PVR.
What it costs
$450 to $750 per person. Flights $200-400, hotels $60-200 per night. Food and drinks are extremely affordable by US standards. A full dinner with drinks for two runs $30-50 at most restaurants. See LAX to Puerto Vallarta packages.
