Weekend Trips from San Diego: Nonstop Flights That Actually Work for a 2-Day Getaway

San Diego International (SAN) is one of the most convenient airports in California. It's right next to downtown, security is faster than LAX or SFO, and the nonstop route map has expanded significantly in the last few years. If you live in San Diego and think you need to drive to LAX for a weekend trip, you don't.

Quick hitters (under 2 hours)

Las Vegas (1.5 hours, $70-150 round trip)

Southwest and Spirit keep this route cheap. You can leave Friday after work and be at dinner in Vegas by 9 PM. The food, shows, and pool scene make it an easy weekend. Don't overlook the off-strip restaurants, which are often better and cheaper than anything on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Phoenix/Scottsdale (1 hour, $70-140 round trip)

Barely longer than a drive to LA. American runs multiple daily nonstops. Fall through spring is the sweet spot for weather. Old Town Scottsdale has an underrated dining scene and the resort pools are a legitimate draw.

San Francisco (1.5 hours, $90-180 round trip)

Alaska, Southwest, and United compete on this route. If you've never explored SF properly, a weekend trip from San Diego is the easiest way to do it. The food scene in the Mission and Hayes Valley is worth the flight alone.

Medium range (2-3 hours)

Denver (2.5 hours, $110-250 round trip)

Frontier and Southwest are your budget options. Denver is one of the most consistently good weekend trips from anywhere in California. The craft beer scene in RiNo, hiking at Red Rocks, and the downtown restaurant scene all deliver.

Seattle (3 hours, $120-250 round trip)

Alaska runs this route well. Pike Place, Capitol Hill, and the waterfront are all walkable from downtown hotels. The seafood is exceptional and the coffee culture goes way beyond Starbucks.

Salt Lake City (2 hours, $100-200 round trip)

Skiing in winter, hiking in summer, and a downtown that keeps getting better. Delta and Southwest both serve this route. The proximity to mountains from the airport is hard to beat anywhere in the country.

Longer flights (3+ hours)

Austin (3 hours, $150-300 round trip)

Southwest and American run nonstops. Austin's live music, food trucks, and Barton Springs make it worth the longer flight. East Austin and South Congress are the neighborhoods to prioritize with limited time.

Dallas (3 hours, $130-280 round trip)

American's hub means frequent service and competitive prices. Dallas has reinvented its downtown. The food scene, particularly the barbecue and Tex-Mex, is a real draw for a weekend.

Chicago (4 hours, $160-350 round trip)

United and American run nonstops daily. It's a stretch for a weekend but Chicago packs more into 48 hours than almost any city. Deep dish, the architecture tour, and the Art Institute are non-negotiable.

International

Cabo (2 hours, $180-400 round trip)

One of the shortest international flights from anywhere in the US. Alaska and Southwest run nonstops. You're on the beach in Mexico before your coworkers finish their Friday evening commute.

Why SAN is underrated for weekend trips

Most travel content about California weekend trips focuses on LAX and SFO. But SAN has real advantages: the airport is ten minutes from downtown (try that at LAX), security lines are shorter, and the nonstop route map covers every destination that matters for a 2-day trip.

We track nonstop flights from SAN every day. Browse current prices on our San Diego trips page.
